Multi-stakeholder peace engagement meeting – West Pokot County

Social Ministry Research Network Center (SOMIRENEC) held a multi stakeholders community peace engagement meeting at Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) in Sigor. The meeting brought together Pokot Central Security Team headed by the Senior Deputy County Commissioner, County Government, Education stakeholders, Community Peace Committee representative, young peace ambassadors, young elites and Religious Leaders from Pokot Central.

The meeting aimed at addressing insecurity challenges along the borders of West Pokot, Turkana and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties, effects of conflict in Chesegon, Sarmach and Muino, effects of insecurity on education and proposed interventions.

This follows a wave of attacks in the area and Cheptulel being the most affected. Some schools have not re opened in the region due to insecurity in the area. The DCC asked the Head teachers of the schools affected to re-open assuring them that he will provide police officers to man the schools. He further assured them of food rations from his office. The area is also experiencing drought, hence forcing learners to stay away from school.
