Support for the elderly and youths in sustainable livelihood project

SOMIRENEC - Support for the elderly and youths in sustainable livelihood project

Location: Karen, Greenhouse

Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya’s economy. For the agriculture sector in Kenya to be productive, there is a high need for inclusivity and research on various crops that can thrive in different locations and with different climatic conditions. SOMIRENEC strives in ensuring that the elderly from Gataka community are well represented and that they have quality food on their table daily. The site at SOMIRENEC is a demonstration centre where we train farmers in conservative farming practices in order to equip farmers with skills and knowledge on proper farming techniques for food sustainability.

Through the initiation of greenhouse farming and poultry, the elderly people in the slum of Gataka are able to get an income and food on their family. We have trained the elderly people in tomato farming in the greenhouse hence increasing their capacity and strength despite their age. The Tomatoes have done well in the past months in terms of yield production and the market too.
