Empowerment and Livelihood project

 

Location of intervention: West Pokot County

West Pokot County is characterized by a diverse climate, topography and land use patterns that influence its economy and development. As a result, the county is known for beekeeping and its sweet honey. The empowerment and livelihood project in west Pokot County targets women and youths also known as Moran involved in beekeeping farming. The project aims at contributing towards climate change resilience and strengthening community livelihoods through apiculture. The project achieves through capacity building of bee farmers on modern bee hives to enhance production and use of climate smart techniques, establishment of tree nursery, distribution of beehives to farmers and installation of water tanks and training women on village saving and loans scheme. Through bee keeping, there is increased in household income and savings, active participation in decision making for women and youths, increased awareness and reduction of FGM, child marriages and gender-based violence, improved food security and community resilience.
